Graveyard Dogs...Sounds awfully like the the hounds from Britain, like the Black Shuck, Padfoot, etc.
(http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/folklore/phantom-black-dogs.html has some good information on them.)

Some of the earliest dogs of death were actually participants of Death's great hunt in Germanic lore - Death would ride out in stormy skies, accompanied by demons and huge black dogs with eyes of fire looking for souls. Death wasn't always the patient grim reaper...

they are real. its freaky! im looking them up now because last night me and my friends went on a fear mission to virginia where a slave house was that is haunted near a place called satans bridge. you had to pass a graveyard that was enclosed by a small stone wall.
when we passed it first to get to the house nothing happened but on our way back (i had a camera to try to catch wierd stuff on film) i was taking pictures of it from out side of the wall and i looked to the right side of the graveyard and there was a dog. it was black and white and did have red eyes. (we were shining a flashlight on it though. I took a picture of it and it started whimpering but it just stared at us. then the dog went around a corner and it was gone. no dog anywhere and the graveyard was closed in and small.
it was freaky! the scariest part of all is when we got to the car, i looked through my pictures and got to the one were the dog was, and there was no dog in the picture. it was crazy. the dog didnt show up on film but was standing there in real life. 4 other people were with me and they saw it too but no dog in the picture. wierd huh?
