The Ticking Clock is based on an actual clock that sat on a shelf above the TV in my Grandparent’s house for as long as I can remember. Just like the clock in the story, there’s a picture of a liver-colored pointer bird dog on the front. My Daddy has it now on his mantelpiece, next to a couple of very lifelike ceramic quail that a cousin of ours made just before she died. All of the people in the story are real, just had their names changed a bit. When various members of my family read the story, they knew exactly who the various people were. As Jimmy Buffett said in the introduction to Joe Merchant “I didn’t have to make a lot of this up.”
