“Number Ninety” is one of the creepiest ghost stories I’ve ever read, yet the story and its author, Mrs. B.M. Croker (1850-1920), are not nearly as well known today as other 19th century ghost story writers like Ambrose Bierce. Mrs. Croker was a British author best known for stories set in British Colonial India, and was a best selling novelist, but her short ghost stories have nearly faded from memory.
There’s not even a Wikipedia entry about Mrs. Croker as of this writing, but you can learn a little bit more about her here and here.
Hopefully we did justice to this fine story on The Moonlit Road.
